Mrauk-U was an ancient capital founded by Rakkhine King
Minzawmun is 1433. It is situated about 80km north of Sittway.
It is reached by a 5 hour boat trip up the Kaladan river from
Sittway. It is noted for its fort-like temples and pagodas built
of massive stone. Unlike the temples of Bagan, Mrauk-U’s ruins
are constructed with stone in a truly unique style rather than
traditional bricks. |

Kyaikhtiyo is located about 160km
from Yangon. Hiking
or taking an uphill ride in a car or snuggling in a
palanquin, annually pilgrims pay homage to the small
golden stupa on the top of a huge gold-gilded boulder,
standing at 1100 metres above sea level. Precariously
perched on the edge of the cliff, the Golden Rock Pagoda
deserves the accolade of tourists as a wonder of

South of Amarapura,
the shallow Taungthaman Lake
is crossed by a long and rickety teak bridge. During
the dry season the bridge crosses dry land. U Bein was
the ‘mayor’ at the time of the shift from Ava, and he
wisely salvaged material from the deserted Ava Palace
to build this 1.2 km-long footbridge. It has stood the
test of time for two centuries and remains the longest
teak span in the world. Near the bridge is a cluster of
tables where you scan take tea, beer and snacks. The
best times to visit the bridge are just after sunrise or
just before sunset. |

altitude
of 1300 to 1800 feet above
sea level. Among the mountains,
it is a plateau stretching 15 miles
from north to south and 25 miles
from east to west. The land has
many streams, springs and a few
rivers for supply of sufficient water
and abundant fish.
Putao is a quiet, peaceful
town, surrounded by icy high
mountain peaks. It was once a
military outpost in the British
colonial days. It was called Fort
Hertz. In Putao, clean, wide roadsare lined with cosy houses with
garden walls using stacked river
stones. Wall creepers grow from

the cracks and
flowering bushes

and trek for miles over the hills
to their farms or the jungles for
picking mushrooms or medicinal
herbs, braving the cold weather.

with their lives and happy to welcome
friends or tourists alike to
their naturally beautiful land. |

Interestingly, the only human
inhabitants in this Archipelago are sea
gypsies, namely Salon in Myanmar. They
live on boats during dry season and
remain on land during rainy season. They
still practise the same techniques of
fishing and building boats, handed down
from their forefathers. |
