Bagan with its thousands of old pagodas is recognized by the world’s travellers as one of the world’s wonders. This 1200 year old city with over 2000 pagodas is proof of the rich cultural heritage of Myanmar. True, it is also one of the archaeological treasurehouses in Asia.

        Inlay Lake is so vast and its altitude of location is so high that it is often referred as ‘‘the sea among the mountains”.         Mawlamyine is the capital of Mon State. It is one of the most beautiful towns in Myanmar, lying in the left bank of the Thanlwin river.
        The vantage point is on the low range of hills behind the town on the Taungwaing ridge. There are famous pagodas as Kyaikthanlan, Maha Myat Muni, Sasana 2500, the Standing Buddha, and U Khanti.
        At a short distance from the town, limestone caves are full of images of the Buddha. The principal ones are the Farm caves on the Ataran river, the Dhammathat caves on the Gyaing river and Pagat caves on the Thanlwin river.

        Hpa-an is the capital of Karen State. It lies on the eastern bank of the Thanlwin (Salween)river. It is a quiet and nice town, surrounded by nature. Most of the Karen nationalities live here with other Myanmar nationals such as the Shans and the Taungthus. In the olden days even Thais lived here, leaving their trace in the name of Hpa-an which means promontory in Thai and Karen.
The landmark of Hpa-an is the Zwegabin Hill. It is very steep but the uphill trip is worth while for picturesque view awaits travellers on the summit. There, Sutaungpyi Zedi stands to fulfil the visitor’s wish as its name suggests. This pagoda was said to be built by a daughter of King Manuha of Thaton.

        Kyaing Tong is the capital of Shan State(East) and it is situated near the Chinese border and the world famous ‘‘Golden Triangle”, a no-man’s land bordering Myanmar, Thai and Laos. It is an idyllic town, surrounded by beautiful hills and forests. The colourful hilltribes add to the charm of Kyaing Tong.

 
 

        Mrauk-U was an ancient capital founded by Rakkhine King Minzawmun is 1433. It is situated about 80km north of Sittway. It is reached by a 5 hour boat trip up the Kaladan river from Sittway. It is noted for its fort-like temples and pagodas built of massive stone. Unlike the temples of Bagan, Mrauk-U’s ruins are constructed with stone in a truly unique style rather than
traditional bricks.

Kyaikhtiyo is located about 160km from Yangon. Hiking
or taking an uphill ride in a car or snuggling in a
palanquin, annually pilgrims pay homage to the small
golden stupa on the top of a huge gold-gilded boulder,
standing at 1100 metres above sea level. Precariously
perched on the edge of the cliff, the Golden Rock Pagoda
deserves the accolade of tourists as a wonder of
Myanmar.

        South of Amarapura, the shallow Taungthaman Lake is crossed by a long and rickety teak bridge. During the dry season the bridge crosses dry land. U Bein was the ‘mayor’ at the time of the shift from Ava, and he wisely salvaged material from the deserted Ava Palace to build this 1.2 km-long footbridge. It has stood the test of time for two centuries and remains the longest teak span in the world. Near the bridge is a cluster of tables where you scan take tea, beer and snacks. The best times to visit the bridge are just after sunrise or just before sunset.

        Tribes and ethnic minorities live in Kachin State, Chin State, Kayah State and Shan State . Each tribe has their unique traditions and customs. Among the tribes, Padaungs are well-known for their peculiar customs. Padaung girls adn women have to wear brass coils on their necks, making them to be “long-necked”.

        Khakaborazi National Park is located in the northernmost part of Myanmar, Naungmon Township of Putao District in Kachin State. The area of the park is 1.472 square miles at an altitude between 3000 feet and 19,296 feet. The
maximum temperature is 15° Celsius and the minimum temperature is -3° Celsius.

        Tourists can travel to Myitkyina by train, by plane or by car and then go on to Putao by plane. The distance between the entry camp and the southern part of the park (Pannandin) is 80 miles.
The alternative route to Pannandin is 43miles by car.

        Along the route to the park, the travellers can gain mountain climbing experiences and catch a glimpse of cultures and traditions of the local national races. They can also get an opportunity to enjoy the natural scenes of snowcapped mountain ranges, ravines, waterfalls, the unique landscape in Southeast Asian region.

Travellers will be mesmerized in the biodiversities of this National Park.There are rare species of herbs and orchids, endangered species of wild life and various kinds of unidentified orchids, plants and butterflies.

       
        Putao is situated at 219 miles north of Myitkyina at an altitude of 1300 to 1800 feet above sea level. Among the mountains, it is a plateau stretching 15 miles from north to south and 25 miles from east to west. The land has many streams, springs and a few rivers for supply of sufficient water and abundant fish.
        Putao is a quiet, peaceful town, surrounded by icy high mountain peaks. It was once a military outpost in the British colonial days. It was called Fort Hertz. In Putao, clean, wide roadsare lined with cosy houses with garden walls using stacked river stones. Wall creepers grow from
 

the cracks and flowering bushes cluster at the gates.
        There are many villages around Putao, sheltering the Kachin nationals and Lisu and Rawang, the subgroups of the Kachin. The suspension bridge over the icy cold Mulashidi Stream is the pride of Putao. The ethnic people walk on the swaying suspension bridge and trek for miles over the hills to their farms or the jungles for picking mushrooms or medicinal herbs, braving the cold weather. The native people are contented
with their lives and happy to welcome friends or tourists alike to their naturally beautiful land.

        Natmataung is located in Southern Chin State. It is less than a day’s drive away from Bagan across the Ayeyawady river. It is accessible from both Mintat or Kanpetlet. At 10,200 feet above sea level, Natmataung is the highest mountain in Central Myanmar. At its base is Natmataung National Park, a haven for rare birds and a bird watcher’s delight.
        Kanpetlet Old Town is situated at 6500 feet and a hotel there caters for food and services to tourists. One can trek through the national park or from camps at various sites on the way. Even
though the uphill trip is not so challenging, it is very pleasant to trek on the pine-clad hills with lovely birds, rare orchids and colourful butterflies and wild flowers. As the route is dotted with villages, it is nice to look at the colourful costumes and life style of the ethnic groups, especially Chin women with various patterns of tattoo on their faces.

        Interestingly, the only human inhabitants in this Archipelago are sea gypsies, namely Salon in Myanmar. They live on boats during dry season and remain on land during rainy season. They still practise the same techniques of fishing and building boats, handed down from their forefathers.

        Myeik Archipelago is situated in the Southernmost part of Myanmar. This immense Archipelago covers approximately
36,000 sq kilometers and includes roughly 800 beautiful islands. Unlike other tropical islands, this Archipelago has pristine islands; owing to its virtual isolation. These islands harbour lush green forests, diverse
wildlife and vegetation. Moreover, the sea around the Archipelago is pollution free, so various kinds of flora and fauna live happily in the underwater world.
        For a diving spree, biodiversity of marine life awaits tourists who like to explore aquasphere. As for water sports, sailing, snorkeling, scubadiving and kayaking are available.
